About this blog
My name is Rachel, I'm 24, and this is my blog. I'm an aspiring writer with a serious case of wanderlust. I am currently writing from Compiegne, France, where I'll be until July 2011, while doing an assistantship through the French government teaching English to elementary school kids. I'm trying to make this blog something to be proud of, even if I lack consistency. I'll try to share my best pictures, regular updates on my life, links and news of interest, and maybe -hopefully- even the occasional short story. Comments, ratings, and other interaction is highly encouraged!-

Getting found
So I’ve decided that getting lost is just a negative way of saying that you found a new route. Today, I pinned down one of my biggest frustrations and confusions. I have been having so much trouble approaching anyone here … Continue reading
Update on my life (ramble)
I felt like it was necessary to give people an update on my life, since most of my writing lately has been very singular and contained. First of all, changing the malaria medications was definitely the right decision. I am … Continue reading
Learning to write
So, Bamba (my brother) already corrected this mistake in a comment on an earlier entry, but here’s a little story about my education in Senegal. I was really embarrassed about this, so I wasn’t going to share this, but I … Continue reading
There’s a coup d’etat in Guinea
I put this picture with this entry because this man looks like a gendarme. But upon closer examination, I think he might just be a mechanic. I can’t tell, so it stays. On Feb. 13, 2007, the president of neighboring … Continue reading
Riots vs. Rallies
In the past weeks there has been some violence over the upcoming election. As foreigners, we are constantly warned against putting ourselves in dangerous situations, but that seems to be becoming increasingly unavoidable. Political marches or rallies are happening almost … Continue reading
Elections, smelections
The first, and potentially only, round of presidential elections took place on Sunday, Feb. 25. The last election happened in 2000, which was regarded as the first internationally recognized fair and free election in the young democracy of Senegal. This … Continue reading
Confessions of a Toubab
A few weeks ago, I had a really bad cold. One evening, while playing with the kids, I caught a glimpse of my reflection in the mirror and made a comment about how sickly pale I was. I said in … Continue reading
Thank you, gracias, merci, jerejef
I just wanted to take a little time to say thank you to everyone who has been posting comments on here. I really love getting feedback from everyone, and it is always much-needed encouragement when I see a new post. … Continue reading
Homesick
My mom often thinks that I like to leave home because I don’t like the United States. She couldn’t be more wrong. I like to leave home because it makes me love home even more. No one could ever appreciate … Continue reading
What you didn’t see on the travel channel
I have to preface this entry with a strong warning. I wanted to write to give you an honest perception of life in Dakar, so I’m being honest. I’m using this entry to write about all the things that are … Continue reading
